The Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre (ACCTC) is a specially designed facility for innovators around the world to test and advance carbon conversion technologies. These technologies are aimed at fast-tracking CO2 emission reductions through the conversion of carbon into usable products.
The ACCTC provides technology developers with the capabilities for testing and refining their technologies using real-life flue gas from natural gas combustion. InnoTech Alberta owns and operates the ACCTC, which opened in May 2018.
The ACCTC is located adjacent to the Shepard Energy Centre in Calgary which provides flue gas emissions from its natural gas-fired power plant.
The first tenants of the ACCTC are the five of the ten finalist teams from the US$20 million NRG COSIA Carbon XPRIZE competition. The competition incents teams from around the world to develop innovative approaches to convert CO2 emissions from fossil fuels into valuable products.
Technologies evaluated at the ACCTC will be applicable to the majority of Alberta’s large CO2 emitters, as well as some of the smaller sources, and potentially address up to 50 per cent of total Alberta emissions. These technologies could also be applicable to industries globally, and the real-world, industrial scale testing offered at ACCTC will accelerate emission reductions across oil and gas, and other industries.
Following completion of the competition in early 2020, the ACCTC will continue as a test centre for new technology development in this area. With its unique capabilities, the ACCTC is expected to become a global hub for innovators working on groundbreaking carbon conversion technologies.
